TV & Film Writing

Vala co-created and co-wrote the acclaimed 8-episode TV series Fractures (Vitjanir) and contributed to the film Natatorium (2024) as a script consultant, showcasing her skill in narrative-driven, atmospheric storytelling. She’s worked as a script editor and consultant on various other projects, fiction, and documentaries. Her scriptwriting showcases a blend of cultural themes and contemporary issues, frequently explored through family dynamics and community life.

Vala’s screenwriting career is supported by a rich background in theatre and storytelling, making her a dynamic voice in Nordic television. Her projects often center on intimate portrayals of community life, weaving universal themes of identity and resilience that connect with a broad viewership. Having written and performed equally for children and adults through the years, she has a talent for weaving stories that bridge the generational gap be it in theatre or on TV.

She has participated in several development programs, including the MIDPOINT Institute's TV Launch, honing her skills with industry experts.

Fractures

Fractures is an eight-part drama series written and developed by Vala Thorsdottir, Kolbrún Anna Björnsdóttir and director Eva Sigurðardóttir. Premiering in 2022, the narrative follows Kristín, a 45-year-old ER doctor, who, after undergoing a divorce, returns to her childhood village with her teenage daughter.

The series is a female-led drama examining personal transformation themes, the tension between Western medicine and spiritual beliefs, and the complexities of familial and romantic relationships.
