As playwright Vala has explored the tragicomic, the absurd and the traditional aspects of theatre, with depth and finesse. Her plays have been translated into English, Danish, Swedish, Slovene, Estonian and Turkish and staged in several venues across Europe.

Vala bridges the gap between the mundane and magical in her books with a sharp eye and a warm sense of humour.

Highlights

Vitjanir – Fractures

Fractures is an eight-part drama series written and developed by Vala Thorsdottir, Kolbrún Anna Björnsdóttir and director Eva Sigurðardóttir. Premiering in 2022, narrative follows Kristín, a 45 year old ER doctor, who, after undergoing a divorce, returns to her childhood village with her teenage daughter.

The series is a female-led drama that examines themes of personal transformation, the tension between modern and traditional beliefs, and the complexities of familial and romantic relationships.

Work in progress

  • A 16 part “feel good” children’s TV series based on her awarded Icelandic Polish books Þankaganga Myślobieg and Þankaganga Myślobieg Susanna in Poland, in collaboration with the Polish screenwriter Agata Karolina Koschmieder, produced by Bjartsyn Films.

  • A dark and mysterious road movie in collaboration with the California based writer/director Pall Grimsson.

Acting

THEATRE

Vala started her career in the theatre, performing her own monologues and collaborating with various Icelandic and international directors. Performances include productions at the Icelandic Take Away Theatre, The Coffee Theatre, and National Theatre of Iceland.

TV & FILM

Vala’s screenwork includes performances in the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service’s New Year’s Lampoon, children’s shows for Channel 2 in Iceland and a supporting role in the TV series Fractures.

RADIO

As a radio actor Vala has performed in various productions for the The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service using her skills to engage audiences without visuals. He has also done a range of voice work for different entities.
