2000 - Háaloft // A Bat in the Attic
The Coffee Theatre, Reykjavík//The Icelandic Take Away Theatre
Director: Ágústa Skúladóttir Actor: Vala Thorsdottir
A 75-minute black comedy monologue about a bipolar woman. It is a comic but heartbreaking monologue that gives great insight into the lives of people with mental illnesses. It became a box office hit at the Coffee Theatre Reykjavik, Iceland in 2000. Vala has played it over 200 times and has performed at various international festivals and psychiatry conferences. It has been translated into English as A Bat in the Attic and Turkish as Çatıdaki Yarasa.
The monologue starts with “hidden theatre” improvisation, where the actress buys her ticket to the performance, but then, in mania, takes over the stage and tells her story.
Translation in English: Gary Owen and Vala Thorsdottir
Translation in Turkish: Dr. Semih Çelenk
